Google Reader gave us a little gift for the new year with some stats about our rss subscriptions.
A bar chart similar in looks to the original Google Trends chart gives you a snapshot of the number of items you read for the following:

  • past 30 days,
  • by time of day
  • day of the week.

The Reading Trends collection of stats provides three tabs regarding the items/posts from each of your subscriptions including those items you read, starred and shared. The items read is the primary tab and provides a list of the feeds you subscribe to and two columns for each subscription:

  • number items read
  • percentage of items read

Another collection of stats called the Subscription Trends has a Frequently Updated tab and an Inactive tab. These tell you the average number of items per day for each subscription and the percentage that you have read.

Seeing these numbers open your eyes a bit prompting you to remove some of your subscriptions, help you realize that you read a particular blog more than you thought, or maybe kick you in the butt to start writing more posts! :) For those that use Google Reader I think you will like these stats. For those of you using Blog Lines or another reader, I think this feature is just another reason to switch over to Google Reader.
