5 reasons why Google relies on the Title Tag

April 11th, 2007  ·  by Chris Dohman  ·  No Comments

The title tag is widely believed to be one of the more influential factors in determining a pages ranking in Google results. You can find reference to this many places including Rand Fishkin’s recent article Search Engine Ranking Factors v2 and Jill Whalen’s article All About Title Tags.

The title tag is also about the easiest thing for you to control in your page. It is easily defined and short in length. So why is the Title Tag which is easy to control, or manipulate, such a prominent factor in Google ranking?

Here are a five ways to go with it:

  • Visible: The title tag is displayed in the top bar of your browser .
  • Logical: Because it makes sense, just like a title of a book.
  • Simple: Even folks that are not SEO’s or webmasters use this tag.
  • Google is not so smart: Google still needs help in summarizing the topic of a page.
  • Google is not so evil,…really….i mean it….honest…..: Google wants webmasters to retain some control of their own pages. :)

Do you agree, disagree, or have other ideas?
